Services Offered

This is an overview of the services we offer. Should you have any questions, you can of course get in touch with us and make an appointment.

Mr Edge has a broad range of expertise within the field of orthopaedics. He is happy to see patients with most musculo-skeletal complaints. Many patients can be treated without surgery, but some will benefit from an operation. You can be assured that any investigations and treatment which is suggested following your initial consultation will be fully discussed with you.

Some of the common procedures are discussed below.

Total Hip Replacement

This is without doubt the most successful orthopaedic advance made in the last thirty years. The relief of pain is almost instantaneous, and the long term improvement in quality of life is unparalelled.

Mr Edge performs uncemented, cemented and hybrid hip replacements, using a variety of bearing surfaces. The subtle differences between these techniques will be discussed with you at the time of your consulation, and the decision as to which implant should be used in your specific case will be explained.

Knee replacement

This operation is another tremendous success story in orthopaedics.

Mr Edge only performs cemented knee replacements as they have a good track record and are well proven. He also performs the latest generation of computer guided knee replacements in appropriate cases.

Arthroscopic (Keyhole) Knee surgery

Several knee conditions can be treated by keyhole surgery. This is performed through two or three tiny cuts around the knee. A small "telescope" is introduced into the knee for visualisation and highly specialised instruments are used to perform the operation.

The most common procedures performed include the removal of loose bodies, excision (or repair where possible) of torn cartilages, debridement of worn joints, and soft tissue release of the kneecap for pain. Should you need a reconstruction of your anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments you would need to be referred on.

Foot Surgery

Phillip routinely performs surgery to correct painful deformities of the big toe as well as the lesser toes. This surgery should only be done if the deformity is causing pain. The presence of a bunion is not in itself an indication for surgery.

Many patients can be very adequately managed with simple measures such as shoe inserts, other orthoses and shoe modification. Phillip works closely with several podiatrists in order to get the right treatment for you individual problem.  If surgery is recommended, the details of this will be discussed with you at your consultation.
